Baz Luhrmann’s adaptation of The Great Gatsby is completely hyperbolic and over-stylised. The fusion of two decades is rendered demonstrably banal through the excessive use of CGI and the staccato structure of the accompanying music. It’s possible to compare the experience of watching this film to attending a child’s birthday party: restless. The film is constantly buzzing with a hyperactivity that never lets up.
